Paradise for Birds, 1989

Visual Conception: Inspired by the banyan groves of the “Birds’ Paradise” in Xinhui, Guangdong, the work features bold, vigorous ink lines that intertwine into calligraphic branches, punctuated by lively touches of color that evoke the abundant life within the grove.

Artistic Style: The work fuses Western modern abstraction with the expressive spirit of traditional Chinese ink painting. Free-flowing black lines, reminiscent of expressive cursive calligraphy, weave together to form a dense banyan grove, while clusters of spontaneous multicolored dots suggest flocks of birds appearing and disappearing amid the foliage.
