宋代郭熙《临泉高致•山水训》说，“山以水为血脉，以草木为毛发，以烟云为神采，故山得水而活，得草木而华，得烟云而秀媚。”山水，草木的搭配组合就像一个鲜活的人。又形容四季山色：“春山淡恰如笑，夏山苍翠如滴，秋山明净如妆，冬山惨淡如睡。”不但要画活，还要体会它们不同的表情、气质。春天的山有一种清甜的笑，秋天的山是勾了眉扑了粉的端庄。

这幅作品不是林间杂树，不是山涧乱石，而是勾了眉扑了粉的端庄。是明净如妆、风韵嫣然的人。这也画家用水墨以形传神的精妙手段。

In Guo Xi's Linquan Gaozhi • Mountain and Water Instruction from the Song Dynasty, it is stated, "Mountains have water as their blood vessels, grass and trees as their hair, and mist and clouds as their divine expressions. Thus, when mountains have water, they come alive; with grass and trees, they become lush and vibrant; with mist and clouds, they exhibit charm and beauty." The combination of mountains, water, and vegetation is likened to a living being. The passage further describes the seasonal characteristics of mountains: "Spring mountains are light, akin to a smile; summer mountains are lush and verdant; autumn mountains are clear and elegant, like adorned makeup; winter mountains are desolate, akin to slumber." The challenge for the artist is not only to depict the scenery realistically but also to capture the different expressions and temperaments of the landscape throughout the seasons. Spring mountains exude a sweet and light laughter, while autumn mountains carry a dignified demeanor as if adorned with makeup.

This artwork, rather than portraying a forest with miscellaneous trees or a mountain stream with scattered rocks, embodies the dignified charm akin to one who has adorned makeup. It reflects the artist's skillful use of ink to convey the spirit through form, capturing the clear and elegant demeanor, creating an image reminiscent of a person with refined grace and allure.
