Phoenix Bearing

Tien Chang titled this work "Feng Yi" , translated as Beauty of Phoenix. The word “phoenix” does not suggest that the horse physically resembles the mythical bird. Rather, it draws upon the phoenix as a cultural symbol of nobility, grace, and vitality. “Bearing” refers to the horse’s dignified presence, composure, and inner character.

The horse advances with its head held high, its neck upright and its body presented frontally. Instead of relying on the drama of a forceful gallop, the artist reveals strength through a composed and assured movement. The flowing forelock, sweeping mane, and animated tail evoke the lightness of phoenix feathers, bringing grace and vitality to the horse’s powerful form.

Through varying densities of ink and the interplay of wet and dry brushwork, Tien Chang conveys both the physical presence and inner strength of the horse. Freely moving, rhythmic lines animate the mane and tail, creating a balance between weight and lightness, power and elegance.

Beauty of Phoenix therefore portrays more than the outward appearance of a horse. It expresses a noble, composed, and life-affirming spirit. The work exemplifies a defining quality of Tien Chang’s horse paintings: he goes beyond physical likeness to capture the animal’s vital resonance, strength, and spirit.
