Celestial

In Chinese tradition, cong refers to a fine horse with a blue-grey or blue-and-white coat and is often used more broadly to describe an exceptional steed. The title Celestial Steed does not suggest a mythical physical form; rather, it celebrates the horse’s extraordinary presence, strength, and spirit.

The horse occupies most of the composition. Its head is gently lowered, its neck curved, and its broad, rounded body extends powerfully across the picture. Instead of depicting an explosive moment of galloping, Tien Chang presents strength held in reserve. The horse appears calm yet fully charged with energy, as though poised for its next movement. Its raised, curling tail adds animation and rhythm to the otherwise grounded form.

Deep blue, turquoise, and green shape the horse’s body. The layered colours create a sense of physical weight and muscular strength while also suggesting light moving within the form. Bright yellow, green, and pale pink fill the surrounding space, creating a vivid contrast with the horse’s deep, contemplative blues and bringing the central figure into sharper focus.

Tien Chang does not describe every anatomical detail with precise lines. Instead, he constructs the horse through broad, forceful brushstrokes, flowing areas of colour, and concise contours. Colours merge and dissolve within the body, preserving the fluid vitality associated with ink painting while giving the work a distinctly contemporary visual character. Scattered touches of colour resemble particles of light, bringing movement and energy to the still surface.

Celestial portrays more than the powerful body of a fine horse. It expresses contained energy—a strength that is calm, confident, and ready to emerge. The work exemplifies a defining quality of Tien Chang’s horse paintings: simplified form conveys power, flowing colour creates vital resonance, and the horse’s presence embodies an uplifting, liberated, and life-affirming spirit.
