Dragon Standing

Tien Chang titled this work Long Zi, translated as Dragon Standing. The word “dragon” does not suggest that the horse physically resembles the mythical creature. Rather, it draws upon the dragon as a Chinese cultural symbol of strength, nobility, and an aspiring spirit. “Bearing” refers to the horse’s posture, presence, and inner character.

The horse stands with its head raised, neck extended, chest open, and legs firmly grounded. The slight turn of its head brings alertness and vitality to its dignified presence. Rather than expressing power through a dramatic gallop, the artist conveys strength through stillness and contained energy, as though the horse were poised to move at any moment.

Dense, dark ink defines the neck, shoulder, and one side of the body, giving the horse a strong sense of weight and physical power. On the opposite side, pale washes, open paper, and concise lines suggest its form with remarkable economy. The interplay of dark and light, solidity and openness, reinforces the horse’s powerful structure while preserving the fluidity and vital resonance of ink painting.

The mane is rendered with swift, rhythmic brushstrokes that suggest movement in the air, while the sturdy legs and firmly placed hooves anchor the figure within the composition. The contrast between the animated mane and the stable body gives the horse both latent energy and a commanding presence.

Dragon Standing portrays more than the powerful stance of a horse. It offers an artistic expression of longma jingshen—the “dragon-horse spirit” associated in Chinese culture with vitality, confidence, resilience, and aspiration. The work exemplifies a defining quality of Tien Chang’s horse paintings: the horse provides the form, while brush and ink reveal its vital resonance, strength, character, and spirit.
