Giant Leap (Ang Cang Tian Bu)

“Angcang” describes a majestic bearing and an extraordinary spirit, while “Tian bu,” in the context of this work, may be understood as a powerful, free, and unrestrained stride.

The dense ink at the centre of the composition forms the work’s visual core of strength. The three horses are arranged in a staggered formation, rendered in varying shades of ink. Their manes flow with the momentum of their movement, naturally guiding the viewer’s eye in the direction of their charge.

Looking closely at the horses’ legs, the artist does not describe each one in precise detail. Instead, he uses concise and decisive brushstrokes to capture a few essential movements. By leaving the forms deliberately incomplete, he creates the impression of rapidly alternating hooves—motion occurring faster than the eye can clearly register.

The dry-brush textures, flying-white strokes, and naturally scattered ink marks bring a sense of air, dust, and vibrating hoofbeats to the still surface of the rice paper. The open space on the right is especially important, allowing the horses’ movement and speed to continue beyond the painted forms.

The brilliance of Giant Leap therefore lies not in meticulous descriptions of the horses’ outward appearance, but in the relationships among the three horses, the varying densities of ink, the rhythm of the brushwork, and the carefully preserved open space. Together, these elements convey speed, strength, and an inner spirit.

Tien Chang paints horses, but what he ultimately expresses is an uplifting, liberated, and vigorously forward-moving state of life.
